Does Your Cat Sleep On Their Left Side?
A new study shows that most cats prefer sleeping on their left side. I would like to add my own two meows to this matter.
Meow, hello and welcome back to my newsletter. I took a short break last week to catch up on sleep and it was much needed. I’ve since woken up and found some fascinating new information to share with you all. But more on that below—first, let’s drift into cuteness, captain’s orders.
Why cats often sleep on their left side
Science Alert recently shared an article on “Scientists Find Most Cats Sleep On Their Left Side.” It is well worth a read. They studied a group of 408 sleeping cats on YouTube and found that the large majority had a clear preference for sleeping on their left side.
The scientists had a very reasonable explanation for this:
The left visual field feeds into the right brain, which is associated with spatial awareness, threat identification, and the coordination of quick escape. So this sleeping position may grant the cat a quicker reaction time when woken by a predator (or needy human).
The article also details how cats also prefer to sleep in high positions, such as in cat trees. This is due to a similar reason—because it allows cats to more easily detect predators when they are sleeping and most vulnerable.
As for myself? Well, my mom did a thorough inspection of her phone gallery, which is loaded with cute photos of me sleeping. It turns out that I seem to have a 50/50 balance on my side preference. While she did find many photos of me on my left side, she also found just as many pictures of me on my right. It seems that it just depends on where I fall asleep, how much tuna I’ve eaten, and how cozy I am at the moment!
