Calming Treats: Do They Really Work? + A Natural Cat Litter You Have To Try
I review Pet Honesty's calming treats and Paco & Pepper's all natural cat litter. I also share the details of my September giveaway!
Meow, hello, and welcome to my first newsletter on Substack. If you don’t follow me on Instagram, you may have missed some very important announcements. My newsletter has officially moved platforms (luketherescuecat.substack.com) and is looking more pawsome than ever. In addition, new issues will be published every other week on Caturday evening, rather than every Caturday morning, so I can ensure that every newsletter is worth your valuable time!
This week, I’m excited to tell you all about Pet Honesty’s calming treats. When I get the 4 a.m. zoomies, or when I’m home alone for extended periods of time, do these tasty little chicken snacks really calm me down? I will also share my thoughts on a wonderful new cat litter from Paco & Pepper. You’ll see why I now prefer this natural cat litter over the regular store brands!
Plus, I announce my new September giveaway, along with the winners for August. I also have some exclusive new photos that you won’t find on Instagram, and weekly inspurration to help you get through the next week.
Before we get started, here’s a little visual treat for you to enjoy!
Calming treats review
In a previous issue, I listed several links where you can find free cat treat samples. One notable company that I mentioned was Pet Honesty, which offers a pet influencer program (US only) for those with over 500 Instagram/TikTok followers. I signed up and requested free samples of their calming treats and hairball support supplement (which I will review in a separate issue).
So, what did I think? Well, to be honest, I was already a big fan of these treats!
Pet Honesty’s calming treats are made with three key ingredients, including thiamine (a B vitamin that is sometimes called an “anti-stress vitamin”); L-theanine (an amino acid that promotes sleep and relaxation in humans and animals); and chamomile (a common ingredient in relaxing teas). All of these ingredients promote relaxation and help treat anxiety in cats, especially for those who show nervousness or anxiety. My mom will leave me these calming treats on my bed, scratch post, and cat tree when she is gone for the night.
Perhaps the best solution is at 3 or 4 a.m., before the sun has risen and my mom’s alarm clock has yet to sound, but I am ready for the game of a lifetime. I am tearing across the living room, tossing my mousey, and making an insane amount of noise. In cases like this, which happen too often, my mom will come out and give me a small handful of calming treats. Within 10 minutes, I will finally relax and take a nap.
The calming treats have a crunchy exterior and creamy interior, with a chicken flavor that is quite addicting. The company recommends 1 treat per 1 pound for adult cats, though my mom gives me a few less and it still provides the same effect.
Do I eat them every day? No, not personally. I don’t show signs of anxiety and nervousness every single day, and I don’t always wake up at the break of dawn wanting to compete in the Cat Olympics. Sometimes, though, it is nice to have a bit of a chill pill in the form of chicken snack, and my mom is glad to have something that calms me down when she is trying to sleep.
You can find them on Amazon and on their website. If you’re on Instagram or TikTok, sign up for their Influencer Program and try them out for free!
Paco & Pepper Natural Cat Litter
Another interesting product that I tried this week was the all natural cat litter from Paco & Pepper. This quality natural litter is made from olive pits without any chemicals or fragrances added. This was especially appealing because cats do not typically like scented litter.
“Cats prefer litter that does not have a lot of additives, is not scented, and doesn't have perfume-y or air freshener type smells,” says Rachel Geller, EdD, a Humane Society of the United States-certified cat behavior and retention specialist and founder of All Cats All the Time, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to preventing the surrender and abandonment of cats.

This natural cat litter checks all of the boxes for me. It’s completely dust-free and doesn’t track all over the place like many of the big-name litter brands that include silica or clay. When my mom was cleaning my litter box, she was very relieved to not have a big cloud of dust rising up in her face. The olive seeds in the litter are also very porous, which allows them to absorb liquid more quickly, allowing for fast clumping and less odors.
The fact it is all natural also makes it safer for your cat, in case they accidentally consume some of the litter (for example, if it gets stuck all over their paws and they’re grooming themselves clean). It’s also better for the environment, as olives are an affordable and renewable source.
You can find their cat litter available to purchase on their website and at Target.
