Does Your Cat Play Fetch?
I love when my mom throws my mousey and I get to chase after it. But not all kitties are the same way.
Meow, hello and welcome back to my newsletter! I took a short break over the last few weeks to celebrate my pop’s 40th birthday, then my mom was busy doing marketing for a kite festival the following weekend, and last weekend, we all just needed a long nap and snuggles.
This week, I wanted to share my love for playing fetch, though it seems that not all cats love it as much as I do. Plus, I’ve got a new photo of the week that you will make you go “Awwww”, hopefully out loud! Let’s dive right in.
Do cats play fetch like dogs?
Ever since I was adopted, I’ve enjoyed playing fetch with my mom and pops. But I recently learned that not all kitties enjoy it as much as I do. According to Live Science, a new study shows that only about 40% of pet cats play fetch (about 2 out of 5 cats).
When someone throws my mousey, I will tear across the room to get it. But, like Scientific American details in their article here, cats will only play fetch on their terms. And as a playful cat myself, I can tell you that’s 100% accurate. I have strict rules for this game, and if you don’t follow them just the way I want, I will stop playing and start grooming my bottom end.
What are the rules, you ask? I’m glad you brought that up. I will only play fetch if:
My mousey must be thrown in the direction that I want. If it’s thrown the opposite way, I won’t go after it and you can go fetch it yourself.
I will not fetch the mousey if it is thrown too close to another person. I will just monitor the situation from afar.
The person throwing the mousey has to be the person I’m playing with. If someone else starts throwing it in the middle of the game, I’m done.
You must also throw the same mousey I’ve already been playing with. If you try and throw a different mousey or toy in the middle of our game, I will just get confused.
I will rarely actually fetch it and bring it back to you. It’s more like I’ll run and tap it a few times, then it’s your turn to throw it again.
Occasionally, if I’m in the mood to play, I will bring the mousey to my mom to start. Sometimes this has been while she was in bed sleeping, or it will be at the foot of the bathroom door while she’s getting ready. More often, she will be the one to initiate playtime, and I’m almost always game.
It often takes a few fake throws from my mom to get started. Once I start flinching like I’m going to go for it, then she’ll finally throw it and the game has officially commenced.
I do not know what “go fetch” means. I respond more to “get your mousey” or simply “get it!!”
Sometimes I just need a breather (I’m chonky), and I will not fetch it for a few moments, but I will eventually get back up and running.
Once I lay down on my side and start grooming myself, I’m done and over it already. You can try and throw the mousey anywhere, but I’m not going for it by that point.

So cute!!! Meelo will run after toys but he never brings them back. He’ll just look expectantly at you and you have to fetch it yourself lol
